2010 Commision

Each 400 year Minneapolis MOSAIC commissions an original work of art that celebrates the cultural and artistic diversity of the city.
Commissioned works over the yeas have included:

  • a ceramic mosaic by Melissa Bean (2003)
  • a symphonic composition by Kary John Franklin (2004)
  • a new dance choreographed by the Zenon Dance Company (2005)
  • a Spoken Word piece (2006)
  • a live theatrical piece by Pillsbury House (2007)
  • a film (2008).
  • a series of photos by Sean Smuda (2009)

This year we are pleased to announce that the commission has been awarded to Katha Dance Theatre and Robert Robinson to collaborate on an original performance piece. Under the direction of Rita Mustaphi, Katha Dance Theatre performs a classical Indian dance form from north India. Named “Minnesota’s master male vocalist” by the Star Tribune, Robert Robinson performs soulful American Gospel music.

The fusion of these two culturally 400 distinct performance styles will result in a unique work of art that bridges the distance between remote cultures that have met up here in Minneapolis. Powerful, rhythmic Indian dance combines with rousing gospel songs and wrenching lyrics to create a new and exciting form of creative expression.
