2007 Commision

Pillsbury House's "Breaking Ice" company created a multi-media theater performance exploring the challenges and joys of living together in an increasingly diverse Minneapolis.

Entitled "Stand in the Light", the piece drew people from a variety of backgrounds to contribute their experiences and personal histories. A series of content-gathering sessions over several weeks provided the narrative and basis for characters and themes. Photographic images were used as the background for the projected setting that framed the performance. In addition to the company artists, six non-actors ages 8 to 80 were selected to participate in the rehearsal and performance process.

Pillsbury House Theatre, located on the corner of 35th Street and Chicago Avenue South, has been serving the area as a professional arts institution since 1992. Uniquely housed within an inner city community center based on the Settlement House tradition, PHT is a diverse company of artists working in partnership with diverse audiences to create arts experiences that transform and inspire.
